The little-known UK airport that you'll wish you were flying from this summer | The Sun

AIRPORTS are notoriously busy around the summer holidays with the influx of passengers making them chaotic places to be.

However, there are some airports that are much less stressful places to fly from, if you know where to look.

The 2023 Busiest Airport Report by ePower Trucks ranked the most popular airports based on the amount of passengers, the amount of airlines and total destinations.

This revealed the best airports for holidays to different countries, as well as the quietest ones to fly from in the UK.

1.      Kirkwall

Top of the list was Kirkwall Airport, which is situated amidst the picturesque Orkney Islands in Scotland.

The region boasts a relatively small population of 7,450 and receives a limited number of tourists compared to bustling urban hubs.

With just two airlines and 11 destinations, all within the UK, Kirkwall Airport caters primarily to domestic travel within the country.

However, if you're looking for a staycation this summer, it could be a great option to fly without feeling stressed.

2.      Humberside

Humberside Airport, located in North Lincolnshire, enjoys a relatively tranquil setting away from major metropolitan areas.

This characteristic contributes to lower air traffic and a smaller number of flights compared to busier airports.

With only four airlines serving the airport, Humberside offers a modest selection of destinations, although Brits can get abroad from the airport.

From Humberside, passengers can fly to Aberdeen, Amsterdam, Jersey and Belfast.

3.      Newquay/Cornwall

Situated on the coastal region of Cornwall in the southwest of the country, this airport resides in a rural area with a relatively low population.

Due to its location, the airport has fewer international and long-haul flight options available.

With just four airlines operating at the airport, travellers have access to a limited selection of five possible destinations to choose from.

They include London, Dublin, Isles of Scilly, Newcastle, and Manchester.

4.      Norwich

Norwich Airport offers international flights, meaning Brits can use it to get away to popular holiday destinations, without the hassle of visiting a busy airport.

While the majority of passengers fly domestically from Norwich, they can also reach the likes of Bulgaria (Bourgas), Cyprus (Paphos), Greece (Corfu, Crete, Rhodes), Italy (Bergamo), Netherlands (Amsterdam), Spain (Ibiza, Majorca, Menorca, Tenerife), and Turkey (Dalaman).

5.      Bournemouth

Bournemouth Airport is another that enjoys a relatively secluded location. As a result, the airport experiences lower levels of air traffic.

Despite this, Bournemouth provides access to a respectable selection of destinations, with a choice of 17 possible locations to explore.

Operating with three airlines, the airport caters to both domestic and international travel, offering travellers a range of options to suit their needs and preferences.
