People are just realizing the real meaning of the brand name Chips Ahoy – some admit it blew their minds | The Sun
CHOCOLATE chip cookies are a national favorite but few people know the meaning behind a popular brand.
People on the internet were shocked to learn how Chips Ahoy got its name.
Twitter user Matt Goldich (@mattgoldich) shared his surprise when he discovered the clever reason for the company name.
Other Twitter users were also impressed by his realization as his Tweet gained almost 48 thousand likes.
The viral Tweet read: "About 40 years late on this but just realized 'Chips Ahoy' is a pun."
The reference relates to the nautical greeting "ship, ahoy" used by sailors to hail another vessel.
As the confectionary company is primarily known for its famous chocolate chip cookies, the nod to the marine warning was likely an easy choice.
And decades later the revelation behind the name has taken the internet by storm.
Twitter users took to the comments section to share their shock at the news.
One baffled follower wrote: "I'm literally eating Chips Ahoy right now and this blew my mind."
