The Art of the Hobbit
by J.R.R Tolkien, Wayne G. Hammond & Christina Scull (HarperCollins £25, 144pp)
When the Hobbit was being considered for publication, the publisher’s ten-year-old son told him that the book did ‘not need any illustrations. It is good and should appeal to all children between the ages of five and nine’.
He was right, of course, except about the pictures.
An illustration by J.R.R Tolkien, which is bound to delight fans hoping to see Hobbiton through the author’s eyes
Tolkien’s draft copy of The Hobbit was filled with his beautiful drawings of Middle Earth, most of which are unknown to readers today.
This charming book rescues over 100 of Tolkien’s own illustrations from obscurity and will delight fans hoping to see Hobbiton through the author’s eyes.
