Nicola Sturgeon heartbreakingly reveals she was ‘still having a miscarriage’ during memorial service
Nicola Sturgeon has revealed she was still going through a miscarriage while doing her duties as Scotland's First Minister.
Ms Sturgeon, while speaking in an exclusive interview with ITV's Loose Women, told how she attended a memorial service while still having a miscarriage.
While she has previously been quite open about her baby loss experience in the past, she provided more detail when appearing on the show.
Speaking to panellists Coleen Nolan, Ruth Langsford, Gloria Hunniford and Janet Street-Porter, Ms Sturgeon was asked how she could deal with such a traumatic experience and continue being a politician at the same time.
She answered honestly: "If you go online and Google, you can find a photograph of me at an event, actually while I'm still having a miscarriage, a public commemoration for a disaster that happened many decades ago in Scotland.
"Looking at me, looking at that photograph now, it’s clear I'm in a lot of pain."
Ms Sturgeon had earlier said the miscarriage had happened "at the very end of Hogmanay in 2010" and she attended the memorial for the 40th anniversary of the Ibrox disaster, which took place on 3rd January 2011.
Addressing how she dealt with the loss, the First Minister said: "How do you deal with it? I can only speak for myself but I'm sure it's more common than just me, you just bury it. You effectively don’t deal with it, you don't process it and I've been doing that to one extent or another for all of my adult life."
She added that the baby loss memorial book – an initiative she launched last week – may have helped her to deal with her experience.
"When I look back to when I had a miscarriage, just at the very end of Hogmanay in 2010, I think back then, if there had been a way of recognising it, that would have bought some comfort at a really difficult time.
"These are the things in politics that often get dismissed as soft soap but I think they are really important because they go to the heart of the values as you have as a country and how you care for each other."
Ms Sturgeon appeared on the panel show just a week before she steps down as First Minister of Scotland.
She has served as First Minister since November 2014, and announced her decision to resign in February.
"There’s been a mix of emotions in the last few weeks but the thing that I can say with no hesitation, is that I’ve never doubted that I’ve made the right decision," she told the Loose Women audience.
Responding to whether it’s 'sunk in yet', Nicola explained: "Probably not, it’s a big, big change and I think it will take a while for me to adapt to a very different way of living."
