The one lesson I've learned from life

The one lesson I’ve learned from life: Designer Pearl Lowe, 52, says the best faces show you’ve lived a life

  • The designer and former Britpop star says aging happily is important
  • She says that the best faces are ones which show that you have lived a life

Designer and former Britpop singer Pearl Lowe, 52, lives in Somerset and East Sussex with her musician husband Danny Goffey, 48, sons Alfie, 25, and Frank, 23, and daughter Betty, 17. She also has a 33-year-old daughter, Daisy, a model, from her relationships with musician Gavin Rossdale.

THE BEST FACES SHOW YOU’VE LIVED A LIFE

My husband Danny and I have been together for 27 years. We’re both creatives, so it’s not like either one of us is a business person who understands spreadsheets. It can be quite hairy.

At one point, in 2009, after Supergrass split up and I stopped my band, times were tough. It was before I set up my design business and we couldn’t put petrol in the car. Yet we got through that and built our life back up. I’m grateful because it taught me how to survive and shield the kids.

We’ve got another two years before the empty nest, so it feels mad that we’re going to be grandparents in April as my eldest daughter Daisy is pregnant. My mum was the most amazing grandma. I was 18 when I had Daisy, so she’d often look after her for the weekend. And I’m sure Daisy’s going to ask the same of me. I’m determined to be a fun grandma.

Ageing isn’t easy but, in my 50s, I’ve learned the power of trust. I am a bit of a control freak, but you need to just trust that everything will work out.

Work makes me really happy. It can be quite dangerous when I’m not creating because I can get depressed. I’m an addict. I’ve come through addiction to drugs — I got clean 17 years ago. Now I’ve got my tools and I know what works to keep my head above water.

I feel sorry for women our age who face pressure to have surgery. They all look the same and, actually, they just look weird — I’d rather look old than weird. I like women whose faces show that they’ve lived a life.

Best to grow old gracefully — and maybe not look in the mirror quite so much.
