Countryfile star Helen Skelton has been topping the Strictly Come Dancing leaderboard week after week, impressing the judges with her dance skills. This week, she and her partner Gorka Marquez prepare to take to the Blackpool dance floor, where they will be performing the Quickstep to Valerie by Mark Ronson ft Amy Winehouse. She recently opened up about her journey on Strictly so far and admitted she hasn’t had a day off since she began.

Helen joined Strictly Come Dancing host Claudia Winkleman on her BBC Radio 2 show from Blackpool to discuss how she was feeling about the weekend ahead.

Claudia welcomed her: “Helen, you are here and do you know what I love, last week we were talking about getting to Blackpool.

“Everyone was like ‘I can’t wait to go to Blackpool’ because they have watched Strictly before and they know it is a huge deal for all of us and we are incredibly grateful.

“And you were like ‘Babe, it is my home, my kids are going to play the slots, thanks everyone stop pretending to adopt this place that is actually me.'”

Proudly, Helen explained: “I wanted to organise a class trip. The last time I was here was for pigeon week and Gorka literally said to me ‘Is that a real thing?’

“And then he said ‘Is it legal?’ and as soon as we got to Blackpool I mentioned it and I kid you not this guy in the back of the pub went ‘Pigeon weekend, excuse me Helen it is World Class Pigeon weekend.'”

After discussing how long the weekend would be for Helen before she headed to her 5Live show, Claudia joked: “Do we need to apologise to your bosses at 5Live?

“Because you are doing the show tomorrow. How is that going to work? You have got a big day, a big night, and then you have to go to the show tomorrow?”

However, Helen admitted: “Well, I have been allowed the day off! It doesn’t happen often and in my defence, before your jaw stays on the floor any longer, in my defence I haven’t had a day off since it started.”

Claudia exclaimed: “Ok you need one!” before Helen continued: “Because some of our lovely colleagues whinge about the fact that they only get a Sunday off.

“And I thought ‘hang on a minute’. I have still got to be on the show but talking about Strictly.”

Last week Helen and Gorka performed an upbeat Salsa to Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber.

The dancing duo came fifth on the leaderboard and scored an impressive 32 out of a possible 40 from the judges.

Touching on how much she has improved week after week, Motsi Mabuse said: “She didn’t disappoint! Helen, you came down those stairs and you threw your hair back like ‘This girl means business.’

“The solo parts were fantastic, so rhythmical and a nice vibe to those dances.”

Speaking to Claudia after the performance, Helen said: “I don’t mind the lifts! It is more hard work for you!” turning to Gorka.

He added: “She loves the lifts but she struggles with the walks! Her name now is Helena from Columbia.”

“He kept showing me music videos and was like ‘be that girl’ and I was like ‘I wish I was like that girl!'” Helen added.

Speaking about wanting to get through to Blackpool, she added: “My kids have already got bags of two pence pieces for the penny slots. So no pressure or you’re going to disappoint kids.”

Strictly Come Dancing airs Saturday from 7:45pm on BBC One, followed by the results on Sunday.
