Aled Jones admits ‘forgetting’ lyrics during nightmare performance for Queen Elizabeth
Singer Aled Jones has had one or two meetings with the royal family over the years, but one of his most memorable has to be when he sang for her late majesty Queen Elizabeth II and forgot the lyrics!
Speaking about the Royal Variety performance, Walking in The Air singer Aled, 51, told us: “It was about 1982 or 1983 and I was singing Memory by Andrew Lloyd Webber and I forgot the beginning of the second verse. It was scary. It was my recurring nightmare as a kid!”
Another "surreal" show for Aled was when he performed for King Charles III and his then-wife the late Diana, Princess of Wales at Kensington Palace.
“I was invited to sing in their living room, because Charles wanted to hear my voice before it broke,” he said.
“It was scary, but they were lovely and very kind. My mum came with me and my pianist. I sang for an hour and then we chatted for an hour. We spoke about all kinds of things, like school and singing.
“It was just so private – it was just the two of them. It was an experience I’ll never forget and I pinch myself because one minute I was in school with my mates and the next I was in Kensington Palace. It was surreal.”
Aled has teamed up with singing pal Russell Watson for a new Christmas album entitled Christmas with Aled and Russell. And it appears his pal has also had some meetings with our royal family.
Russell had the pleasure of performing for Her Majesty numerous times and is continuing his royal connection as an ambassador of The Prince’s Trust.
“My memory of the Queen was that she was always a lady that had a smile on her face,” said Russell, who first performed for the late monarch at the Royal Variety Performance in 2001.
“I think she was conscious of the fact that for whoever she was meeting, for them it was a special moment. Charles always makes you feel special too and he’ll be a great king.”
Christmas with Aled and Russell is released 11 November on BMG. Their UK tour starts on 13 November – for tickets, visit axs.com
