A young Scouse couple are hoping to open up a “sex superstore”, after years of battling through “dated perceptions” of what adult shopping actually is.

Married pair Catherine Kershaw and Ben Hughes are the owners of sex shop Scandals.

The pair have been running the business, which already has two shops in Birkenhead and Bootle, for several years – with the help of Catherine's parents, making it a real family experience.

And now they are hoping to expand by opening up their very first central Liverpool store in the basement of the famous “Bling Bling” building in Hanover Street.

Speaking exclusively to the Daily Star, mum Catherine said: “The area has got so many vacant shops, and the high rents the landlords are charging, we are fortune that we have been given the chance to take a store on.

“It's been a really long battle to even find a landlord who would even rent to an adult shop of all things, which is crazy given how open-minded people are – especially in Liverpool.

“There used to be more adult shops in Liverpool, but two have closed, and we are a small community who backs everyone in the industry.

“This is now the right opportunity for us to move into the city centre and be welcomed with open arms.”

The couple has applied to Liverpool City Council for a licence to open to new Scandals store.

If granted, they can open from 9am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday and between 10am and 6pm on Sundays and Bank Holidays.

The proposed site of the new shop is inside one of Liverpool's most iconic buildings.

It houses the infamous Herbert's Hairdressing Salon and School, and was designed by renowned architect Piers Gough.

Although some would take issue with a sex shop opening in their city, Catherine insists that the company is very much “family people first”.

She said: “We are a small independent company and operate with a small amount of staff.

“We are family people first and foremost and want to create a future where adult's aren't ashamed of who they are."

And the couple told the Liverpool Echo: “And for those who are perhaps nervous, we'd love the opportunity to put your mind at ease.

“When we discuss our work with those who haven't been into an adult shop, the line we always get is 'I bet you get loads of weirdos in' our answer is 'No, we are privileged to serve warm-hearted and open people every day, we are an age-appropriate environment and you'll find more offensive things on your phone'.”

Liverpool City Council will make its decision in the next few months, but the Daily Star has reached out to them for a comment.
