Is All Creatures Great and Small based on a book?

All Creatures Great and Small follows the adventures of a young vet, James Herriot, who moves to the Yorkshire Dales during the 1930s.

The much-loved Channel 5 show is in fact based on a series of novels written by author James Herriot, whose real name was James Alfred Wight,

The first book was published in 1969, under the title If Only They Could Talk.

This title was later changed by an American publisher to All Creatures Great and Small, and saw sales be boosted considerably.

The name comes from the hymn All Things Bright and Beautiful.

As of 2022, 60 million copies of the eight books in the series have been sold worldwide.

Is All Creatures Great and Small a true story?

The late author James Herriot wrote the books based on his own experiences as a young veterinary surgeon.

The stories are based on his life, the animals, and their owners.

James was a practising vet for almost 50 years, after graduating from Glasgow Veterinary College in 1939,

At the time the books were published, veterinary surgeons were discouraged from writing under their own names.

With that in mind, Jamess chose a pen name for himself after seeing Scottish goalkeeper Jim Herriot put in an impressive performance for Birmingham City in a televised game against Manchester United.
