Jaime Winstone has teased what EastEnders fans will discover about Peggy Mitchell in the soap’s upcoming flashback episode.
Peggy Mitchell was played by the late Dame Barbara Windsor for two decades and is one of EastEnders’ most iconic characters of all time.
Now, Peggy is set to be delved into further for a flashback episode set in the winter of 1979, which will explore the Mitchell family’s very-chequered past.
Fans were treated to a first-look last night with some new pictures from the upcoming episode released by the BBC.
But Jaime has given more insight during a chat on Thursday’s This Morning, where she revealed a more ‘vulnerable’ side of the hard-nosed landlady will be shown.
Chatting to Rylan Clark and Ruth Langsford, she shared: ‘You’ll see a lot more of a vulnerable side to her, the making of, how Peggy Mitchell became Peggy Mitchell.
‘She’s a bit more vulnerable, a blossomed flower.
‘As society breaks us down into more hard toughened women, I think that’s what we love about Peggy.’
There will be more to explore in the family dynamic, as the actress added: ‘You see her relationship with her boys and the foundation of her family.’
Ruth went on to note that while Windsor herself was never a mum, she but brought very motherly qualities to the legendary landlady.
The actress replied: ‘That’s the sort of thing I drew on when I thought about Peggy, she’s such a tough mum and she really believed in her boys.
‘There’s a lot of that protection, that I got from Barbara myself. I put a lot of that into it
‘As soon as the wig went on, that was it! I did speak to her and say, is it the right thing for me, am I allowed to do it?
‘She would say on set to me when we did Babs, you’re more me than me, but make this your own.’
Fans may remember Jaime portrayed the late soap star in BBC’s 2017 biopic about her life, Babs, written by EastEnders scriptwriter Tony Jordan.
It showed Windsor in the 1990s as she prepared to go on stage, and recalled events from her life, including her childhood, marriage to gangster Ronnie Knight, and her roles in the Carry-On films
New pictures showed the cast in character for the first time, with George Russo set play Eric, while Daniel Delaney and Teddy Jay will play legendary duo Phil and Grant respectively.
George Greenland will take on the role of Billy, while Charlie Heptinstall will portray Charlie Mitchell.
