EastEnders has signed its first drag queen character as a cast member for the BBC soap.

Next week TV viewers will see Felix Baker played by Matthew Morrison arrive in Albert Square as Mitch Baker’s nephew.

However fans will soon discover he has a drag alter ego and goes by the name of Tara Misu.

Sources claim that during his time on the show, Felix will mostly appear as himself.

But they added: ‘"There will be occasions when he dons the frock and wig to become Tara Misu and goes for a drink and maybe even gets on stage at The Prince Albert."

Although the BBC show has had drag queens make an appearance before, they have been one-offs.

This will be the first time a full-time cast member has a drag persona.

Speaking about joining the show, Michael said: ‘‘I am blessed to have the opportunity to step into the heels of the fierce Tara Misu as part of my role on EastEnders.

‘‘It’s a privilege to represent the LGBTQIA+ community and to showcase the creative art of drag to both viewers at home and the residents of Walford.

“It is also fitting this is happening just as Pride is marking its 50th anniversary this year.’’

Viewers of the BBC One soap will see his debut on the soap in a new storyline next week.

Mitch Baker (Roger Griffiths) will get a shock when his estranged brother Avery (played by Omar Lye-Fook) turns up in Walford out of the blue.

He will bring his sons Felix and Finlay (Ashley Byam) along with him.

Bosses have teased that they will "shake things up" in The Square.

Behind the scenes, Michael has had some handy tips from Ru Paul’s Drag Race UK star Vinegar Strokes about how to make Tara Misu shine as a drag queen.

Among her advice is how to walk in heels, how to build confidence and why leaving the house without a nail is a no-no.

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday on BBC One at 7.30pm
