Queen makes surprise visit to open new London train line named after her

The Queen made a surprise appearance at the opening of the new Elizabeth line on Tuesday morning.

Her Majesty, 96, looked regal in a yellow coat, matching hat and white gloves as she arrived at the capital's Paddington station to mark the completion of the Crossrail project.

With the nation's longest-reigning head having cancelled a slew of events due to ill health recently, her attendance at the transport event was not publicly announced in advance.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said on Tuesday morning: "In a happy development, Her Majesty The Queen is attending today's event to mark the completion of the Elizabeth line.

“Her Majesty was aware of the engagement, and the organisers were informed of the possibility she may attend.”
