Jurgen Klopp signs new Liverpool contract in huge U-turn after revealing plans to quit in 2024

JURGEN KLOPP has officially signed a new contract with Liverpool to extend his stay until 2026.

The Reds boss previously stated his intention to leave when his previous deal expired in 2024, but he will now stay at Anfield for more than a decade.

Klopp has penned a two-year extension after feeling revitalised by the club's bid to win the quadruple.

Assistants Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz also signed new deals up until the end of the 2025-26 season.

Klopp told the club's media: "There are so many words I could use to describe how I am feeling about this news… delighted, humbled, blessed, privileged and excited would be a start.

"There is just so much to love about this place. I knew that before I came here, I got to know it even better after I arrived and now I know it more than ever before.

I feel like I’m being burnt alive from Suicide Disease, says ex-Villa player

"I had to ask myself the question: Is it right for Liverpool that I stay longer?

“Along with my two assistant managers, Pep Lijnders and Pete Krawietz, we came to the conclusion it was a ‘Yes!’

“When the owners brought the possibility to renew to me, I asked myself the question I’ve mused over publicly. Do I have the energy and vibe to give of myself again what this amazing place requires from the person in the manager’s office?

“I didn’t need too long to answer in truth. The answer was very simple… I’m in love with here and I feel fine!”

Owners Fenway Sports Group were keen to take advantage of Klopp's change of heart and came to an agreement over a new deal.

It is a big U-turn for the Liverpool boss, who stated in March that 2024 would be the right time for him to depart and take a sabbatical.

FSG president Mike Gordon was at Anfield watching Liverpool's Champions League victory over Villarreal and helped progress a deal with Klopp, whose agent Marc Kosicke was also at the match.

Klopp is loved on the red side of Merseyside and could lead his side to a historic quadruple this year.

He has transformed the club and has been rewarded with two contract extensions since taking over in 2015.

Klopp led Liverpool to their sixth Champions League trophy in 2019, beating Spurs 2-0 in the final in Madrid.

The Reds then won the Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup in 2019, before finally landing the Premier League title in 2020, their first domestic league title since 1990.

Klopp also won the Carabao Cup against Chelsea earlier this year, and faces the Blues again in the FA Cup final in May as Liverpool chase an unprecedented quadruple.

His contract extensions have seen Klopp's salary rise to a reported £16million.

That makes him the second-highest earner among Premier League managers behind Pep Guardiola and puts him on more than double his compatriot Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea.
