'If I played for Man Utd I'd hate it too' – Steven Gerrard's brilliant response to Michael Owen after Liverpool return
ASTON VILLA boss Steven Gerrard brilliantly shut down Michael Owen after being asked about his return to Anfield.
The 41-year-old, who departed the Reds for LA Galaxy in 2015, returned to his former stomping ground for the first time since leaving.
His Villans side lost 1-0 in Merseyside in Saturday's 3pm kick-off as Mohamed Salah's penalty proved to be the difference.
Following the match, Gerrard's ex-Liverpool team-mate Owen declared he hated coming back to Anfield after he joined Real Madrid in 2004.
After spending just one season at the Bernabeu, the 2001 Ballon d'Or winner linked up with Newcastle, before representing Manchester United and Stoke.
And Gerrard was quick to mention Owen's connection with Liverpool's rivals United when answering his question.
Owen, who was working a pundit for DAZN's analysis of Villa's trip to Liverpool, said: "We’ve all played and gone back to Anfield, I must admit I hated going back to play against them.
"But what were your emotions like going back today, and how did you feel about taking a team to your home?”

To which Gerrard quipped: "If I played for Man Utd I'd hate coming back too!"
Following rapturous from Robbie Fowler, Owen and Shaun Wright-Phillips, Gerrard added: "Listen, it is what it is Michael. I'm on a journey.
"I'm privileged and honoured to take this position. It's a fantastic club. It's still early days.
"We're still trying to evolve the team and improve and get a lot of information across to the players.
"I will always be a Liverpool fan – that's a fact.
"But at the moment, my priority is obviously Aston Villa and trying to improve this team and move us up the table."
