Dan Walker and his professional dance partner Nadiya Bychkova took on the notoriously difficult Rumba on Saturday night’s Strictly Come Dancing. The BBC Breakfast host earned a respectable for 31 points for his performance and the pair were thrilled to be through to the quarter final of the series. However, not everyone at home were happy with the results and viewers were divided on social media over Dan’s progress.

Taking to Twitter, Max White posted: “This is rigged how is Dan through again #strictly.”

@Jaesgate continued: “I genuinely think I might have to stop watching #strictly if Dan makes it to the final? There are some incredible dancers who have left early and he’s STILL there.”

Janine Miller added: “No way – bl**dy fix – Dan is worst dancer left #scd #strictly.”

Honey Bee shared: “Dan should have gone weeks ago. He keeps on getting the sympathy votes from breakfast viewers. #strictly #StrictlyComeDancing.”

Rachel Louise commented: “What the hell?! Even his dance partner looks surprised every time their put through. #Strictly.”

Rebecca Jones asked: “In the nicest possible way, who is actually still voting for Dan on #strictly can see someone really strong leaving tonight because of it who is worthy of a quarter final place.”

However, many viewers were quick to defend Dan’s progress with Siobhan tweeting: “It’s not rigged. He has A LOT of fans who express every week across social media that they’re voting for them. It’s wrong I agree but it’s not rigged. #Strictly.”

David added: “#strictly Dan is the best improver, well done!”

Declan Kincaid posted: “Congratulations to @mrdanwalker I thoroughly enjoyed your performance yesterday so I’m pleased to see you’ve been voted through to next week. #Strictly.”

Speaking to host Claudia Winkleman after it was revealed he would face the quarter final, Dan remarked: “Sounds a bit ridiculous doesn’t it?

“Claudia, I cast my mind back to ten weeks ago when first time I went on the dance floor and I had that same thing I’ve had my whole life where I felt like my body was sort of folding in on itself.

“And I felt so incredibly uncomfortable.

“But the last few weeks, it feels lovely out there and I’m really enjoying it.

“So I’m so thankful to everyone who has put us through. We’re having a great time aren’t we? Bring on the quarter final.”

Nadiya added: “This is him. Whatever he does, he does 100 percent and on Monday he told me it’s the busiest week but I will learn the Rumba, and he did. And I’m so proud.”

Talking about becoming a spray tan convert, Dan joked to Claudia: “You are my idol.

“I asked for three days in the Mediterranean. This is what I’ve gone for this week.

“If I’m here next week, I might follow in your footsteps and go full mahogany.”

Claudia revealed he would need “four dips” in the spray tan booth with Dan laughing: “Four dip, OK, right.”

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday on BBC One at 6.40pm.
