Testing a new idea – proper food

James Martin

Speculation swept over the site as to what the mouth-watering dish could be, which appeared to include a lattice style puff pastry on the outside with a mystery filling within.

Guesses ranged wildly from “fish wellington” to “ham and egg pie”, with one viewer, maggiesaysalot, bizarrely quipping: “You cooked my doggies toe beans in pastry????”

Instagrammer kettlebelljohn quipped, perhaps sarcastically: “Whatever it is you can guarantee there is at least 10lb of butter in it!”

The comment seemed to be a reference to the calorific recipes James loves, which he recently wrote a cookbook about, entitled Butter.

“Haddock & scallop Wellington?” nikkiblairm tentatively questioned of the dish, before asserting: “You should drizzle a Béarnaise sauce over it for the ‘gravy’.”

Although the chef had not so much as revealed the real contents yet, nic_joanne then joined the conversation to exclaim admiringly: “By ‘eck, I need this right now! Absolutely delicious looking!”

The 49-year-old Saturday Kitchen star’s recipes have previously proved to be such a hit with fans that many now seem to automatically trust his creations will hit the right spot.

However, not everyone was as enthused. Some argued that it looked “dry”, some suspiciously questioned what it actually was, and others, like samwaterhouse65, bluntly shot him down with a simple: “Not for me, I’m afraid.”

However, James is renowned for his edgy creations, boasting ingredients that are guaranteed to keep the viewers guessing.

One post from his Instagram page recently had its ingredients unveiled as “cured juniper gin salmon with cucumber and ginger pickle and crispy reindeer moss”.

“‘Reindeer moss’ – local supermarket stocking it this year?” laughed fan instant_karma in a nod to his Marmite-style originality, which foodies seem either to love or hate.

Some besotted fans have even flooded James’ page with a deluge of comments about wishing to marry him.

They will be sorely disappointed to learn he is currently loved-up with long-term girlfriend Louise Davies, a TV producer who he met while taking part in the celebrity edition of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?.

The celebrity heartthrob grew up in Malton, North Yorkshire, which is often dubbed the “food capital” of Britain, where his parents were farmers on the opulent Castle Howard estate.

He once opened a restaurant inside his hometown’s top luxury hotel, the Talbot, where his dishes were labelled “close to faultless” in newspaper reviews.

He also enjoyed a 10-year TV career with the BBC, leaving Saturday Kitchen after the trauma of witnessing Dubai-based magazine publisher Dominic de Sousa collapse and suffer a fatal heart attack before his eyes while representing the channel at an awards show.

The long stint on Saturday Kitchen for the BBC was then followed by ITV shows James Martin’s French Adventure (2017), James Martin’s American Adventure (2018) and Saturday Morning with James Martin, where fans can currently catch a glimpse of his culinary prowess.

In September, he even launched his own range of premium French wines, no doubt drawing on the oenophile tendencies he picked up while living in France.

Meanwhile, he has also been transforming his health, reporting an incredible weight loss of five stone in a matter of just two months, after competing on Strictly Come Dancing inspired him to make the change.

Some who support him have gushed that they believe his finished recipes should be framed as art, so the popularity of his on-screen appearances, for aspiring chefs and armchair viewers alike, looks set to continue.
