John Whaite slammed online trolls who have branded him a “Muscle Mary” following his muscular transformation since he won Great British Bake Off in 2012.
The 32-year-old baker has been blowing Strictly Come Dancing viewers away with his impressive dance moves as he continues to make history as part of the first all-male couple to compete on the long-running BBC show.
Almost 10 years after he took home the glorious Bake Off cake stand, John has completely transformed his formerly lean body into the muscular and toned physique he boasts today.
But the cook has since opened up about his struggles with bulimia after vile trolls hit out at the blonde hunk for his impressive figure.
In a lengthy Instagram post, the star slammed the cruel comments about his appearance after explaining how his regular workout routine helps him feel in control of his hectic life.
John took to Instagram to voice his opinions and raise awareness for those also suffering with the mental health illness.
He penned: “Since I started working out I've had so many messages from members of the gay community telling me how disappointed they are with me for becoming ‘yet another muscle Mary’.
“I don’t work out so I can post pictures of myself on Instagram. I don’t work out because I feel having a muscular body type makes me a better person.
“I work out because I am bulimic and because I have struggled with body dysmorphia since I was a little boy,” he explained.
John went on to add: “Going to the gym is my way of keeping things under control. It allows me to feel like I have a small grip on the rudder of my life.
“I also listen to classical musical while I work out, so it gives me a little time to zone out of this very hectic world we all share.
“But please, if you’re going to post platitudinal screenshots about being kind and caring, please put that into practice. You don’t know what any single one of us is going through.”
He concluded: “If you feel the need to comment on someone’s life, direct that energy inward and focus on yourself. It'll make you a better person.”
The star was soon flooded with a slew of comments of fans who rushed to support his powerful message online.
Fellow Strictly star Jowita Prystal gushed: “Well said! You’re such an inspiration! Sending you lots of love.”
Coronation Street’s Charlie Condou added: “And more importantly, it’s none of anyone’s business! You look great.”
The star first opened up about about his bulimia battle on Steph's Packed Lunch last year.
