A Place In The Sun presenter Ben Hillman was tasked with finding a holiday home in Tenerife for friends Richard and Chris. The duo met 10 years ago and bonded after Richard agreed to become Chris’ tour guide on holiday as he’s visually impaired. The pair now go on regular getaways and wanted Ben to find them an idyllic winter retreat, but they were left horrified by the host’s “bargain” property choice which they labelled as “a shoebox”.

Richard, who works as a plumber, and Chris, who composes music, bonded a decade ago and often jet off to the south coast of Tenerife.

With a combined budget of £110,000, Ben was tasked with finding them the perfect pad in an area that would be quiet enough for Chris to compose music, but be lively enough for the duo to make friends.

However, Ben got off to a rocky start with the friends who shut down the first and second apartments he took them on a tour of.

Things took a turn for the worst when Richard and Chris were left mortified by a £76,000 apartment Ben selected out for them.

The guests were not enthralled by Ben’s first and second choices on properties on the island, stating they were not particularly accessible for Chris.

The third property, however, did impress the guests, who appreciated the apartment’s scenic views and crisp modern interior.

For their fourth property, Ben showed the duo a ground floor two-bedroom apartment for £76,000 which was once used as a shop.

However, when they went inside, the pair said the apartment felt “boxy” and was “pretty basic” as it had no windows in one of the bedrooms.

A disappointed Richard said: “It’s basically like it was one shop and there’s a [blanket] on the wall, which might be a window, but it might not.

“It probably isn’t because there’s next door there so I don’t think there’s a window.”

Chris added: “It just doesn’t seem to have any personality, it’s literally a shoebox.”

Richard chimed in: “It hasn’t got any personality, and there’s no character.”

Despite Ben’s best efforts, the communal pool and the low price tag were not enough to impress Chris and Richard.

When Ben asked how they got on with the apartment, Chris replied: “Not very well really, sorry.

“We appreciate the bargain factor, and it will be a bargain for someone, but unfortunately that’s not us.”

Ben then took the pals to the fifth and final property of the episode which they approved of more than the majority they toured around.

In the end, Richard and Chris told Ben they had their sights set on the third property they viewed.

They went back to visit the third property again, but they decided not to put in any offers.

Their search to find the perfect winter apartment on the island is set to continue in due course.

A Place In The Sun continues weekdays at 4pm on Channel 4.
