When Riverdale first aired on The CW in 2017 it became an instant hit and gained heaps of fans as well as numerous awards. Although viewers were pleased to see the series return earlier than expected, many were left stunned by the premiere and tried to guess how the season would progress.

The shocking season finale saw Veronica Lodge (played Camila Mendes) and Archie Andrews (KJ Apa) break up for good.

This led him to try his luck with Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart) and just as things were heating up they noticed a mysterious ticking sound.

In a jaw-dropping turn of events, fans saw smoke rising in the distance over what looked like Archie’s house.

This was the vengeful workings of Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos) who planted the bomb under Archie’s bed as he left town for good.

With viewers concerned with the fate of Archie and Betty, season six returned and left fans with even more questions.

Fans were introduced to a new location, Rivervale, a town which was parallel to the ones they were used to, where the residents were performing sacrifices.

Viewers watched in horror as the locals appeared to gather up Archie after his suspected demise.

This included Cheryl (Madelaine Petsch) reaching into his chest and pulling out his heart, leaving it to pulse in her palm for a few seconds to a delighted crowd.

Many fans were left stunned at the premiere’s unexpected twist and took to Twitter to express this including June, who wrote: “Wtf in the actual f**k is happening in #Rivervale #Riverdale.”

While Alev08 tweeted: “I don’t know wtf I just watched but that was horrendous #Riverdale #Rivervale.”

However, at the beginning of the episode, Archie woke up to tell Betty he had a dream about a town called ‘Riverdale.’

This left fans to come up with an interesting theory of the couple being in a coma as a result of the coma and potentially dreaming about Rivervale.

jivy1401 took to Twitter to share their thoughts and theory: “In regards to tonight’s #Riverdale or #Rivervale episode who also thinks that Betty and/or Archie are in a coma from the bomb and season 6 will pick up from them waking up from the coma??”

MultiFand0mBabe wrote: “After tonight’s episode I’m even more convinced that Archie is in a coma & what’s happening it’s in his head (dream).

“BUT I believe he’s hearing what the people around him are talking about & the part about Betty being pregnant I’m pretty sure will be true,” they added.

YassineKhaled23 shared: “There are 2 explanations of what in f*****g seven hells just happened. Either this is a parallel universe where Archie & Betty are having wild, real wild dreams while being in a coma after Hiram blew them up or this, where the crossover with Sabrina is getting started.

Another viewer, barchierinas suggested: “I still think this is Archie’s coma dream when he wakes up in the first scene there’s the same ticking as from the bomb and he’s in Rivervale timeline 1.

“Then when he’s sleeping again, there’s ticking again, Betty disappears behind him and boom Rivervale timeline 2 #riverdale,” they explained.

In an interview with TVLine, Riverdale’s showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa was quizzed about the episode and dropped a teaser about the season.

He stated: “I’m not going to speak to alternate universes or dreams or anything like that, but I will say that this is all happening, and we will play as though this is all happening, even beyond the first five episodes.”

Riverdale season 6 continues Tuesday on The CW.
