EastEnders star Danny Hatchard reveals suicide attempt aged 19

Former EastEnders star Danny Hatchard has opened up about his suicide attempt at the age of 19.

The actor, now 30, was a student when he felt like he ‘didn’t want to live anymore’ and struggled socially.

Danny, who played Lee Carter in the BBC, made the revelation on Twitter as he defended his former drama school principal Chris Hocking from a London-based Arts Ed school.

The former boss has resigned after an investigation found dance classes were ‘overly sexualised.’

Danny, who is currently starring in Ridley Road, wrote: ‘The beginning of my first year at Arts was very difficult.

‘I remember checking the easiest and most painless ways I could take my life.

‘I felt so socially out of my depth that I didn’t want to be alive anymore.’

He told his followers of his actions ‘one Friday night in particular,’ after which he confided in his headteacher for support.

‘One Friday night in particular I made preparations to make a huge mistake, before realising that passing my pain onto my family wasn’t the answer. It never is…’

The headteacher then paid for a counsellor for him.

‘He told me I was going to be alright and offered to pay for me to see a counselor who went on to completely change my life.’

The ex-headteacher has now stepped down from the role following an external review, led by Rebecca Tuck QC, over ‘serious historic claims of misconduct.’

The investigation has concluded that there was ‘an overly sexualised environment within a number of music and dance classes,’ according to a statement from the chair of trustees.

The statement added that ‘some students’ were ‘clearly distressed’ by ‘wholly inappropriate’ terms such as ‘sexy dance,’ ‘wear what you dare’ and ‘naked bond,’ which were ‘notorious.’

The statement from Mark Burch continued: ‘She [Ms Tuck] found that some staff members exercised poor judgement in their relationships with HE [higher education] students.’

Danny’s character left EastEnders in 2017 after playing Lee for three years.

He returned temporarily in late 2019 for a short stint and again in December 2020.

Danny’s EastEnders character ran away from his mental health problems after a suicide attempt on the soap.

In 2020, he joined the cast of the Our Girl as Private Rhett Charlton before joining Ridley Road this year.
