THE Travelers Championship takes place this week after the drama of the US Open at Torrey Pines.
And some of the key players from the third Major of the year are back in action again this week.
And our man David Facey went 5/6 for places in his picks last week and brings you his selections for this week.
Tips for Travelers Championship
Hot shot: Paul Casey, 16-1.
Did us a favour in the each way market at the US Open by matching the best round of the tournament on the final day, with a 67 lifting him into a share of seventh place at Torrey Pines.
Defending champion Dustin Johnson is joint favourite with Bryson DeChambeau, but DJ still looks out of sorts, and it’s hard to believe DeChambeau will not have at least a slight hangover from his back nine nightmare at Torrey.
Brooks Koepka will probably find it hard to drum up any enthusiasm for this non-Major, so Casey looks the pick of the big names who have decided to go again after an energy-sapping US Open.
He is bang in form – fourth at the USPGA and a fast-finishing sixth over at the European open before heading to California – and has shown his liking for River Highlands, with two runner-up finishes among four top fives.
Mid price: Scottie Scheffler, 25-1
Tempting to go with Brian Harman, a personal favourite who cleaned up in the Top Lefty category last week, and Doc Redman also made the short list after finishing second at Palmetto.
But Scheffler’s first PGA Tour victory cannot be far away, especially if he starts to translate his impressive Major championship form into dominant showings in the regular events.
He has finished in the top twenty in all five Majors since playing his way onto the PGA Tour last year, with his share of seventh place at Torrey Pines coming on the back of a third place at The Memorial.
Led the putting stats last week and also made plenty of birdies – a must this week, on a course that offers up loads of low scores, headed by Jim Furyk’s incredible 58 a few years ago.
Long shot: Mackenzie Hughes, 100-1
The three figure quote looks pretty generous for a player who was in the final group at Torrey Pines alongside Louis Oosthuizen, and who finished third in this event last year.
OK, Hughes was hopelessly out of form before the US Open, missing five cuts in a row. But his much-improved effort last week could be just the confidence boost he needs.
He played most of his best golf in the second half of last year to force his way into the 30-man field for the Tour Championship, and it would be no surprise to see him finish strong again.
Has made the cut in all four appearances in this event, and boasts a scoring average of just over 68. So the Canadian battler ticks plenty of the right boxes.
