My daughter is being blamed for her partner's aggressive dog

DEAR DEIDRE: THE labrador-cross owned by my daughter’s partner has bitten someone’s arm and she wants to rehome it – but his family say it is her fault the dog has become aggressive.

My daughter has a chihuahua and her partner’s dog constantly attacks it.

The bigger dog has got more frustrated being shut inside while the little one runs around outside.

They decided between them the big one should go, but his family said it was her fault it has become nasty because she keeps it behind a baby gate when the other dog comes in.

My daughter is 28 and her partner is 30. I’m her mum so I’m worried.

My daughter doesn’t want to fall out with his family.

DEIDRE SAYS: This dog could leave somebody badly injured or kill your daughter’s dog. It should be muzzled near strangers and children. Could you look after her dog? Then your daughter can visit regularly.

Suggest they talk to a dog behaviourist to see whether proper training will calm the aggression. Ultimately your daughter and her partner have to decide what works best for them. Can she ask her partner to explain to his family they need to work through the issues as a pair?

If the dog continues to be unsettled, rehoming it would pass the problem on to somebody else so a vet may be best to help with the right course of action.
