'How I Met Your Mother': Lucy Hale Was in Same Show As Then-Boyfriend

Before making it big on Pretty Little Liars, Lucy Hale acted on How I Met Your Mother. The brunette star appeared in a 2007 and a 2014 episode. Her boyfriend in 2007 was on the show as well. While Hale is now dating Skeet Ulrich, there was someone else in her life at the time. Here’s the How I Met Your Mother co-star that Hale dated.

Lucy Hale played Katie on ‘How I Met Your Mother’

Hale played the character of Katie on How I Met Your Mother. Her first episode was in 2007, titled, “First Time in New York.” Katie visited her older sister Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders) in New York City for the first time, as the episode title suggests.

Katie brings her boyfriend along on the trip, surprising Robin. She tells her older sister that she wants to sleep with her boyfriend of two months, but Robin tries to convince her not to. Ted (Josh Radnor) tells his kids that Katie did sleep with her boyfriend, and uses it as a lesson to tell his children not to “have sex until [they’re] married.”

However, Ted’s kids don’t buy it. They ask him what really happened. He recalls explaining to Katie what his mindset was like as a 17-year-old boy. He tells her that he would have told a girl anything to get her to sleep with him, which makes Katie realize she wants to wait, and her boyfriend dumps her.

Hale returned as Katie in the 2014 episode, “Vesuvius,” which is amidst Robin and Barney Stinson’s (Neil Patrick Harris) wedding celebration.

Lucy Hale was on ‘How I Met Your Mother’ with her boyfriend

Hale’s boyfriend in 2007 was David Henrie, who played Ted’s son Luke. He was in the same episode as Hale in 2007, and at the time, the pair were dating. Henrie acted on How I Met Your Mother from 2005 to 2014, but he filmed all his scenes at the start of the show to avoid significant aging through the show’s nine-year run.

“We shot the ending of the show like 9 years ago! Wonder if the writers stuck to what I remember,” Henrie said on Twitter during the show’s finale airing on March 31, 2014.

“After tonight I can finally stop getting harassed by friends/family to tell them whom the mom is,” he continued in another tweet.

Hale and Henrie dated from 2007 to 2009, and they both also appeared on Wizards of Waverly Place together. Their scenes in How I Met Your Mother didn’t overlap, but they were in the same episode in 2007 while dating.

Lucy Hale is now dating Skeet Ulrich who stars in The CW’s ‘Riverdale’

Years after Hale and Henrie broke up, she is now dating Skeet Ulrich from The CW’s Riverdale. Hale was also on The CW, playing the lead role in Katy Keene which aired for one season in 2020. The two enjoyed a lunch together in February 2021 in Sherman Oaks, California, engaging in PDA while eating their meal.
