Actress Julia Garner has won plaudits for her portrayal of Ruth Langmore, an impoverished young Missouri woman trying to make a better life for herself, in the TV series Ozark. The star has won two Emmy Awards for her performance and become a fan-favourite among audiences. Some are keen to know more about Garner’s background and her nationality.
Where is Ozark star Julia Garner from?
Garner is an American actress who was born in the Bronx, New York and grew up in the neighbourhood of Riverdale.
Her mother is Israeli therapist Tami Gingold, who had a successful career as a stand-up in her native country before moving to the USA.
While Garner’s father is Thomas Garner, an art teacher and painter from Shaker Heights, Ohio.
The star is a million miles away from Ruth and told W Magazine in 2017 about the part: “I’m from Manhattan.
“I’m some Jewish girl from the Upper West Side. Like, I should not be here.
“The first time I fired the gun, I literally screamed. It was like, Okay, now shoot into the ground, and I shot it, and it went, ‘pew,’ and I was like, ‘Ah!’ I’m so different from Ruth.”
She has also described herself as the “quintessential” New Yorker, admitting she didn’t even have a driving licence given her life using public transport in the city.
The star tied the knot with her long-time boyfriend and lead singer of indie band Foster the People Mark Foster at the start of the year, shortly before the coronavirus pandemic hit America.
They got hitched in a chic ceremony at New York’s City Hall – the same venue Garner’s parents also wed 40 years earlier.
She wore a stylish white pantsuit for her nuptials, later changing into a gown for the evening reception.
The acclaimed actress described to Vogue Magazine how she was hoping to channel Sex And The City with a “Carrie Bradshaw moment”.
Garner has spoken about her identity and family before, telling The Cut in 2017: “All the women in my life are very strong — my grandma, my mother, my sister.

“My grandparents are German Jews but they left Berlin because of the war — that’s why I have a German passport.
“There are very strong women in my life. I think it’s just important to represent that.”
Despite Garner being very different from Ruth, her ability to do accents helped her to land the role of her Ozark character.
The actress was one of the few to put on a Southern drawl when auditioned for the part.
She was convinced she hadn’t got the role after an ambivalent response from the casting panel.
Much to her surprise, Garner later learnt she had won the role which would propel her into the spotlight.
Garner is adept at accents, showing off her skills not just in Ozark but also in Netflix’s surreal limited series Maniac, where she did an impressive English one for a Lord of the Rings-esque dream sequence before later switching back to her natural New York vernacular.
The actress will be collaborating with Netflix once more in the upcoming series Inventing Anna in which she plays socialite New York Anna Devley.
Inventing Anna has been created and produced by Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal genius Shona Rhimes.
The show is based on an article in the New Yorker about Anna Vadimovna Sorokina, who ingratiated herself into some of the most exclusive circles in New York before defrauding others.
Inventing Anna doesn’t yet have a release date, but Garner has been spotted shooting scenes for the series around the Big Apple.
