Israel Adesanya named top of UFC power rankings ahead of Khabib and McGregor but admits 'I don't know what it means'

ISRAEL ADESANYA has admitted he 'doesn't know what it means' to have topped a UFC power ranking leaderboard.

ESPN released their first chart of MMA's top performers earlier this week.

As the octagon's middleweight king, Adesanya was awarded the number one spot – ahead of Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The 31-year-old responded by tweeting: "Dunno what it means but 👍."

He also quoted Kanye West to add: "It’s provocative… gets the people going."

Over 11,000 fans 'liked' Adesanya's tweet and it is precisely his social media following that pushed the Nigeria-born fighter to the top of the list.

ESPN's 'power' rankings differ from the pound-to-pound judgements, taking into account a fighter's success, momentum and star power.

A September victory over Paulo Costa counted as Adesanya's second win of the year and he is next tipped to step up to light-heavyweight.

Jan Blachowicz claimed that belt on the same night and could face the middleweight champ next year.

Headlining UFC 243 in front of 57,000 in Melbourne last year was also highlighted in the power ranking, along with Adesanya's popular social media antics.

Coming in at No.2 was Khabib, whose retirement somewhat downgraded his judgement on 'momentum'.

Conor McGregor was rated at No.3 having barely fought in recent years, showing his long-lasting star power.

It is expected that a successful return to the octagon, next year versus Dustin Poirier, would elevate the Notorious to top spot.

Jon Jones and Amanda Nunes also made the top five.

Stipe Miocic, Kamaru Usman, Valentina Shevchenko, rising star Khamzat Chimaev and Deiveson Figueiredo rounded off the top ten.
