Netflix salaries revealed: Data shows how much content execs, engineers, marketers, and more made at the streaming service in 2020

Netflix is thriving in 2020. Its global subscriber base surged during lockdowns, as the company churned out hits like "Tiger King" and "The Queen's Gambit."

The streaming-video giant also continued hiring around the world during a time when layoffs were sweeping the media landscape. LinkedIn data shows Netflix kept bringing on new hires this year. And Netflix's own career's page lists hundreds of job openings.

But how much money are they making?

Business Insider analyzed disclosures released by the US Office of Foreign Labor Certification for foreign staffers on work visas to shed light on what Netflix has paid for certain roles. The data revealed how much Netflix offered to pay foreign staffers its sought to hire in the US for certain jobs, including content, marketing, and engineering roles.

It included wages from 144 foreign-labor-certification applications that were submitted by Netflix and certified during the US government's 2020 fiscal year, which ended in September.

Nearly all the applications were for roles at Netflix's Los Angeles and Los Gatos, California offices, its respective content and tech hubs.

Netflix declined to comment for this story.

Netflix's compensation philosophy

Netflix has a unique compensation policy that aligns with its unorthodox cultural philosophy, anchored by tenets like "freedom and responsibility."

The streaming company doesn't offer the performance-based bonuses, unlike some others in the tech industry, because, as co-CEO Reed Hastings has said, the company believes bonuses hinder innovation. 

Instead, Netflix just pays its employees really well. The company, which says it thinks of itself like a professional sports team, says it pays staffers at the top of each worker's "personal market." That personal market is based on each employee's role and qualifications for the job.

As it relates to the data, the wages offers included are the minimum amounts the company declared in foreign-labor-certification applications that it would pay specific workers, according to US Department of Labor documentation. The salaries are based on the average compensation that similar employees with comparable qualifications in each job and industry are paid, which is known as the prevailing wage.

Netflix may choose to pay employees more than the figures reflected in this data or compensate them in additional ways, like through stock options and grants. While Netflix doesn't do bonuses, it does allow employees to choose each year how much compensation they want in cash versus stock options.

Based on the data, Netflix offered annual base salaries ranging from $110,000 to $850,000, with a median of $400,000, for various roles.

Content and production

  • Content accountant: $110,000
  • Supervisor, creative dubbing: $160,000
  • Production technology specialist: $180,000
  • Manager, production safety: $210,000
  • Manager, content strategy and analysis: $210,000
  • Manager, content acquisitions – original documentary: $230,000
  • Manager, production finance: $250,000
  • Series team lead – Americas: $250,000
  • Manager, production finance – features: $350,000
  • Post production counsel: $450,000

Marketing

Netflix offered staffers on US work visas in marketing roles annual base salaries ranging from $210,000 and $330,000 per year.

The positions included:

  • Marketing operations manager: $210,000
  • Creative agency partnership manager, marketing: $225,000
  • Partner marketing creative manager, brand partnerships: $235,000
  • Manager, VFX global resources: $330,000

Product and engineering

Netflix offered staffers on US work visas in product and engineering roles annual base salaries between $160,000 and $850,000 per year.

The positions included:

  • Product video editor: $160,000
  • Original series, product creative strategy: $250,000
  • Manager, product platform strategy, planning, and analysis: $300,000
  • Product designer: $325,500 median; ranging from $325,000 to $500,000
  • Senior data scientist: $412,500 median; ranging from $360,000 to $500,000
  • Senior data engineer: $425,000 median; ranging from $390,000 to $550,000
  • Senior software engineer: $430,000 median; ranging from $154,669 to $620,000
  • Senior UI engineer: $467,500 median; ranging from $250,000 to $500,000
  • Senior research scientist: $540,000 median; ranging from $425,000 to $630,000
  • Engineering manager: $600,000 median; ranging from $241,696 to $720,000
  • Engineering director: $850,000

The positions included:

  • Associate, strategy, planning, and analysis: $185,000 median; ranging from $145,000 to $210,000
  • Senior game publishing producer: $200,000
  • Travel operations manager – Americas production: $210,000
  • Manager, corporate communications: $235,000
  • Business operations specialist: $240,000
  • Functional lead, people technology: $330,000
