Tom Holland confirms Spider-Man 3 filming is underway in Atlanta

It’s taken a while to get to this point, but Spider-Man 3 is finally underway.

Tom Holland has confirmed that filming for his third solo outing as Peter Parker has begun, as he jetted into Atlanta, Georgia last night.

The 24-year-old filmed himself on a private plane for his Instagram stories, before greeting his followers from the tarmac.

And even with a face mask on, we could see that Tom was very excited about why he had flown to the States.

The actor said: ‘OK so we just landed in Atlanta and it’s time for Spider-Man 3, let’s go!’

We’ve got to give Tom kudos for not letting slip the title just yet, considering his habit of dishing out spoilers, but we’re sure we can expect many near misses (and headaches for Marvel execs) over the coming months.

The star had previously confirmed on his father’s podcast that he would be flying directly from Spain, where he was filming Uncharted, to Atlanta for filming, and signalled he would be Stateside until March.

So it looks like despite restrictions for the coronavirus pandemic, Spider-Man 3 is on track for its release date of December 12, 2021.

We nearly didn’t get Tom back as Spider-Man, after the superhero was dumped from the Marvel Cinematic Universe when Sony and Disney were unable to come to an agreement on financing.

Thankfully, Tom managed to get Disney CEO Bob Iger and Sony chairman Tom Rothman to reconcile, all while at a pub quiz down his local, after Iger gave him a call.

And apparently, the actor used his starring role in Sony’s Uncharted as leverage.

Iger previously said that the third Spider-Man film would be a ‘Peter Parker story that has never been done before on film’, after the events of 2019’s Far From Home (spoilers ahead).

The blockbuster’s mid-credits scene sees J Jonah Jameson of The Daily Bugle revealing Spider-Man’s secret identity to the world – so the third film will follow Peter as an unmasked superhero.

Zendaya will return as Peter’s girlfriend Michelle, while Benedict Cumberbatch will feature in the film as Doctor Strange.

Jamie Foxx has been cast as Electro, who he previously brought to life in the non-Marvel The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

The as-yet untitled Spider-Man sequel will be the fourth film in Phase Four of the MCU, following Black Widow, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and Eternals, all of which have been pushed back due to the pandemic.
