There are plenty of celebrity couples in Hollywood, but only a select few earn the coveted distinction of being a “power couple.” John Legend and Chrissy Teigen are the definition of the term for a few reasons: they each dominate within separate careers (that each cross into multiple industries), they look amazing together, set standards for relationship goals, and are incredibly open with the public. We can totally picture what a happy hour with them would look like just by glancing at all of the food on Teigen’s Instagram grid (and we’d happily accept an invite).
While the couple doesn’t seem to have much scandalous relationship drama waiting to be uncovered (yet it hasn’t stopped some people from hating them), they’ve certainly been through a lot together over the years, from their infamous breakup that Teigen refused to accept to their struggles to start a family together.
Get comfortable because we’re about to explore some of the most intimate details of Chrissy Teigen and John Legend’s relationship, and with a couple as candid as they are, there is a lot of ground to cover.
Love at first video shoot
Maybe love is a strong word, but if John Legend and Chrissy Teigen were asked to describe the first day they met in the fewest words, their answer could be: burgers, sex, and video shoot. It’s widely known that the couple met in 2006 when they were matched in a very Hollywood-like way. The director of Legend’s “Stereo” video, Nabil Elderkin, was a mutual friend and suggested Teigen be Legend’s love interest. Talk about life imitating art.
“We spent the whole day dancing together, grinding together,” Legend told The Guardian in 2017, “And, uh, we made a music video.” True to form, Teigen told Cosmopolitan many more juicy details about the day a few years earlier. All of that grinding meant the two got close to each other very fast, bonding both on and off camera. “I’m not going to lie. We hooked up,” confessed the Sports Illustrated cover girl. Not before feasting on In-N-Out burgers.
But they didn’t get serious right away. “The worst thing you can do is try to lock someone like that down early on, then have them think, ‘There’s so much more out there,'” Teigen said, adding that she tried not to ask about the ultimate commitment. “Marriage was never my goal, because I’ve never been very traditional. I was just happy to be with him.” Using the word “happy” to describe Teigen and Legend’s relationship is quite the understatement… they need to be dating coaches in their spare time.
John Legend's proposal was almost very unromantic
There are many ways to propose marriage, and no way is wrong. Hopefully, every couple remembers their proposal as romantic. Chrissy Teigen and John Legend tell their proposal story with fondness, but some issues nearly ruined Legend’s plans in December 2011 during a vacation to the Maldives. While driving to the airport, the couple got into a fight. “We had opened our [Christmas] presents beforehand, and he had only gotten me a cookbook and a crockpot,” Teigen told FABLife. “I remember him going, ‘You just wait!'”
She almost didn’t have to wait long, because Legend told Oprah Winfrey on Next Chapter that security almost ruined his plans. “[The ring] was in my carry-on bag going through the airport security, and security wanted to look through my bag,” the singer said. “And they wanted to look in that particular box, and Chrissy was standing right next to me.” He was panicking about everything being ruined but said he was thinking about getting down on his knees in the middle of the airport. We know he would’ve — but fate stepped in, and for some reason, security didn’t open the box. Phew.
The actual proposal happened during a beautiful dinner in the Maldives, where the ring was presented to Teigen in a silver dome full of arugula. That’s an interesting way to present a diamond. But Teigen loved the moment. “It was just very lovely and sweet,” she told FABLife.
Italy plays an important part in their relationship
Why get married in the US when you can get married in Italy, right? John Legend and Chrissy Teigen agree, but they also have a sentimental reason for choosing the destination — they fell in love during a trip to Lake Como. “The very first time John and I went [to Lake Como], we were in our first year of dating and it was so magical,” Teigen reminisced for an interview with Chase Sapphire’s Talking Travel series (via People). “We say we fell in love there because it was such a beautiful place and the timing was perfect for us to take our relationship to the next level.”
The trip was so beautiful that it left Teigen in tears. “I remember crying when it was over because I wondered if anything could be so perfect again,” she continued. That’s so sweet — we’re getting teary-eyed over here. But there’s no need to sob for too long. As we said, the couple got married there in 2013. Plus, they also filmed the video for Legend’s hit “All Of Me” there and took their daughter Luna back to the place where Teigen says she made the wish that Legend would one day become her husband. “It’s just a place we feel at home,” Teigen said in an interview with People. Someone pass us a box of tissues, please? The tears won’t stop!
How much money are John Legend and Chrissy Teigen worth?
Like it or not, one of the qualifications of having a “power couple” crown is having a lot of money, and John Legend and Chrissy Teigen can check off that box with confidence. According to Celebrity Net Worth, the couple is worth a combined $75 million as of 2020. The report says that Legend is responsible for most of his family’s income, but Teigen has earned $10 million per year since 2018 — that’s nothing to blink at.
Teigen is perfectly comfortable with the fact that her husband makes more than she does and that being with him has helped her career. “I got so lucky that I met John, who propelled my career. I’m not delusional: that definitely helped. But I don’t want to be thought of as just John’s wife, so I’m trying to make a name without it, which is hard in its own way,” the cookbook author told Cosmopolitan.
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Legend and Teigen own real estate properties in California worth a total of $19.2 million, including a home in West Hollywood that they purchased in April 2020. They also own two penthouses in Manhattan worth a combined total of $17 million.
Chrissy Teigen has been open about her struggles with IVF
John Legend and Chrissy Teigen have never rushed their relationship milestones, but their goal to start a family wasn’t delayed on purpose. Teigen has been very open about her struggle to get pregnant and her journey with in vitro fertilization (IVF). “You hear stories about IVF working the first try. But you’ll hear a lot more stories about when it takes a few times,” the mom of two told The Cut in 2018 when she was pregnant with her son Miles. “Ours didn’t work the first time, and it was devastating.” She said the key to surviving the process is to remember that no IVF experience is universal. “There’s no right way to do IVF. You just have to keep hoping that it will happen. It’s easy for some, and not for others. And that’s okay.”
In 2016, Teigen told People (via Self) while pregnant with her daughter Luna that she and Legend chose to have a girl. “I’ve made this decision,” she reportedly said.”Not only am I having a girl, but I picked the girl from her little embryo. I picked her and was like, ‘Let’s put in the girl.” She’s been criticized for the choice since she opened up about it. So much so, in fact, that the normally candid model deleted tweets defending herself to naysayers. The original story has also curiously been deleted from People‘s website.
Luna and Miles Stephens are the cutest kids ever
Chrissy Teigen and John Legend have two of the cutest kids in Hollywood, and there is plenty of evidence on the internet to prove it. Four-year-old Luna Stephens gets her sass from her mama, but don’t call her cute. Teigen shared a video on Instagram, calling her daughter “cute,” and Luna had feelings about it. “No, I’m not, I’m not cute ever!” In Luna’s world, girls can only be “beautiful” and “cute” is reserved for boys like her brother Miles. Don’t argue with her because as she told her grandmother Vilailuck “Pepper” Teigen in a video on Chrissy’s Instagram, “I know everything.”
“Everything” includes how to negotiate for candy. In another adorable video on Instagram, Chrissy says, “Tell me about why you deserve the candy?” Luna simply replies, “I want the candy ’cause I want it, and I like it.” Basically, when you’re having a bad day, look for Luna on her mom or dad’s Instagram accounts — you’ll never be disappointed.
The same can be said for Luna’s little brother Miles. Just take a look at this video compilation of Miles videos via In Touch. He knows how cute he is, but he’s generally quieter than the ladies in his house, except when he’s singing his dad’s hit song “I do,” doing yoga with his mom or tasting her latest culinary creations.
Their fights are sometimes very public
Chrissy Teigen is not afraid to air some of her marital grievances with John Legend on Twitter. Our favorite instance is when Legend forgot to tell Teigen why he was bringing his team members from The Voice over for dinner. “John invited everyone to dinner at the house after and I’m really f*cking mad because I didn’t make a f*cking FINALE meal. I would have gotten a cake or something too?? Who the f*ck does this? U don’t win the voice then eat short ribs,” she tweeted. Short ribs sound great to us.
Teigen regularly roasts her husband’s video attempts on Twitter, sarcastically laments his tendency to steal chargers, and exposes his hilarious drunk moments, like the time he got drunk at Universal Studios and changed the words to “All Of Me.” Most of the public fights are all in fun, but Legend and Teigen have spats just like the rest of us. “We have to communicate with each other just like every couple does, and we fight sometimes just like every couple does,” Legend shared on YouTube. He shared on Armchair Expert that although he had a history of cheating before meeting Teigen, their fame plays a part in why he wouldn’t betray her. “Chrissy has so many million Twitter followers. If I were to do anything, it would be career suicide. It would be terrible. It just gives you another reason to not f*ck it up,” he said.
The couple doesn't try to change each other
It’s no secret that John Legend and Chrissy Teigen have different personalities — they are the textbook case of opposites attract. Legend’s quiet nature lends itself to Teigen’s outspoken one and vice versa. It’s difficult to change anyone, but when you are one half of a power couple, your instinct might be to change or ask your partner to change to support your career. Legend and Teigen don’t play that game. “I was worried [about Chrissy’s tweeting] like, ‘Don’t be too honest, don’t share too much.’ Legend told Oprah Winfrey on Next Chapter. “But then, I think she’s actually more brazen on Twitter than she is just in regular life. She shows more of her sweet side in regular life.”
“I feel like [Chrissy] should be her own entity and her own persona,” he continued, commenting on why their opinions and behavior do not reflect the other person. “And I’m not going to say, ‘So you can serve my needs and my career you have to muzzle yourself and not be who you are.'” Teigen said in the Next Chapter interview that it does make her feel bad when people say they won’t support Legend because of her words or actions. “I’m with someone who is totally secure in himself. He’s not trying to be anything other than what he is. The confidence he has brings it to me.” Teigen told Cosmopolitan.
Chrissy Teigen is over one of John Legend's most famous songs about her
It’s clear that John Legend’s hit song “All Of Me” is about his wife Chrissy Teigen from the first few words, “What would I do without your smart mouth.” The couple even filmed the video for the song right after their wedding at a house in Lake Como. “There’s a song on my album that actually could be pretty good for the wedding. It’s called ‘All of Me’ and it’s inspired by Chrissy. She loved the song and cried when she heard it,” Legend said at Yahoo!’s On The Road Tour in 2013 (via People).
But times have changed, and now that “All Of Me” is basically the world’s wedding song, it’s magic has worn off for Teigen. “When it got popular, I had been hearing it for almost like a year and a half or something,” she told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show. “I like it a lot, but I’ve heard it for a long time. If I go to a show of [John’s] tomorrow and he sings it, everyone turns to look and see if I’ll start crying, and then I have to either pretend or … I don’t know what to do anymore.” This is a very unrelatable problem, so we don’t know what to tell her.
Chrissy Teigen and John Legend revealed a surprise pregnancy in 2020
At the end of John Legend’s 2020 video for “Wild,” John Legend and Chrissy Teigen revealed they were expecting their third child. Teigen opened up on Twitter about why getting pregnant naturally makes her extra nervous about this pregnancy. “A few weeks after [breast implant removal] surgery, I took a test. And for many years now, I’ve taken pregnancy tests almost every month, praying to see a positive one day,” Teigen tweeted. “Just wishful thinking. I never had a positive before.” She continued, “I was not disappointed. But I was scared sh*tless. Was pretty positive you shouldn’t get your boobs out while pregnant? Pretty sure.” The model was referring to the false negative pregnancy test result she got before surgery.
“I didn’t think I could get pregnant naturally anyway. So the odds just felt…bad,” she said. But all is well, and there is another baby Legend on the way. We’re so excited for one of our favorite power couples!
